As a Yank I can’t help but notice that whenever British Monarchists defend the institution of the royal family, they always talk about how it brings in tourism and is respected by people all around the world. Without fail, they’ll always bring up the fact that the monarchy “is” very popular in the United States. They’ll cite that as an example of the monarch’s respect abroad and like…

I genuinely hate to break it to you guys, but we here across the pond view the royals the same way we view mascot characters at Disneyland. Like, there is absolutely zero actual respect. Whenever children in the U.S. learn that the monarchy is still a thing, they are usually confused. Adults then explain the monarchy as “a silly little thing that the Brits do for fun.”

When I was a kid learning about the revolution, I just assumed sight unseen that the British must have had their own revolution at some point and got rid of the king.

When my dad told me that the royal family was an extant institution, I thought it was a joke at first. He liked to kid around, and it just seemed more likely that he was fucking with me. I could not wrap my head around why you would have a queen in the 21st century.

When I first learned how much the UK government gives royal family I was honestly kind of shocked. I had figured that the royal title was so ceremonial as to be completely meaningless in a governmental context. I thought it was like being made a colonel in the state of Kentucky; that being basically just owning a fancy medal that says you are.

And FURTHERMORE, we Yanks (we in a rhetorical sense. Not me lol) were only really crazy about Queen Elizabeth. The moment she died people over here pretty much stopped paying attention to the royal family outside of scandals.

I think people in both countries tend to overestimate the cultural similarities between the United States and the United Kingdom due to our sharing a language. We absolutely do not see the monarchy in the same way its hardline supporters in the U.K. do.

Also while I’m at it, I saw one guy speculating that we loved the Queen because of “Pride at their English heritage” and I also feel I need to clarify that English is pretty much the only heritage in the United States that people are kind of ashamed of. If you only have English heritage here that’s seen as a bad thing. Like, we associate that with like inbred Old Money weirdos and Mormons. Even the Boston Brahmin don’t wanna be seen as having ‘English Heritage.’ I don’t personally feel that way, but that’s sort of the attitude here.

i like to think everyone has a colour associated with them, whether its just your fave colour or what you generally wear most of or what colour your bedroom walls are. i always associate the name sophie with dark blue, my mum is always a nice turquoise, i like to think my colour is a bright sunflower yellow.

if you have a specific shade pls tell me i adore when ppl have associated colours and tell me them, bc i think of them when i see that colour

Book recommendation for yall! Found this in the library and checked it out bc I was a curious. It’s a really interesting look at the lives of women in the UK and the lesbian community, and has lots of chunks of stories from the various folks who were interviewed

The stories are very honest and very interesting! It has a lot of different answers to questions such as “how do people conceptualize themselves when they don’t have the language to do so” and is super insightful, I think a lot of it is applicable to non-UK folk as well

If your local library has it, definitely give it a read!

President-elect Donald Trump announced Saturday that he wants Mark Burnett, the British television producer who created “The Apprentice,” to serve as special envoy to the United Kingdom in his second term. “With a distinguished career in television production and business, Mark brings a unique blend of diplomatic acumen and international recognition to this important role,” Trump said of his longtime friend in a statement shared on his Truth Social platform. “Mark will work to enhance diplomatic relations, focusing on areas of mutual interest, including trade, investment opportunities, and cultural exchanges,” Trump wrote. “The Apprentice,” of course, was the NBC reality show that launched Trump’s name and brand from the New York regional tabloid scene to national and international fame when its first season debuted in 2004. Burnett is credited with burnishing the flaws in Trump’s public image by downplaying his various failed business ventures and playing up his real estate holdings, so the network could present him as an icon of American capitalist achievement.

At the time, Burnett had already been instrumental to the launch of the “Survivor” franchise in 2000. He went on to create the hit entrepreneurial show “Shark Tank” — which formerly starred billionaire businessman Mark Cuban, one of Trump’s most high-profile detractors — and produced other hits like “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?”

i’m tired of failing classes that i find interesting, just because the things we need to know are not things my brain can learn. i still haven’t found a method to learn history in a way that works for uni. and my executive dysfunction is not helping, end-of-term exams are killing me (current daily routine is 1) not sleeping 2) sobbing during every exam)

latin and greek are saving me though !! i’ll definitely pass my semester but probably not with grades as good as i need (16/20). i just can’t manage to do well in roman history and i feel so ashamed about it because it’s interesting ! i like it ! usually i only struggle that much with classes that i don’t like.

anyway i just submitted an essay (short, only 4500 words and that’s already more than what was asked of us) on the imperial cult from Augustus to Domitian and hopefully i’ll get ONE good grade thanks to this. because i worked quite effectively and it’s the kind of work i’m able to do, what i struggle with are in-class exams (which represent 85% of exams in this class)
